Question:
What is IP Pointing? |
If you run your own physical server machine yourself
from your home or office, and you want to
have that server machine handle requests for your
domain name, then you would
use the IP pointing feature.
For example. Lets pretend that you registered a
domain such as: your-own-site-name.com
and you want to host this domain name from your
office computer line which has
an IP address of: 209.44.22.88. To make this work,
you simply:
1. login to your
Account Manager
2. click on "Domain Accounts" link
3. select the domain name you want to manage.
4. Click on "IP pointing" link under Managed DNS
Services located near the bottom of the page.
5. Put in the IP address to your office computer.
6. If your DNS Nameservers are not currently listed
as:
ns1.privatewhois.com
ns2.privatewhois.com
change you DNS Nameservers to
the above or the IP pointing will not work.
7. Wait about 24 hours for your DNS Nameserver to
propagate,
before your domain name starts resolving to the IP you
specified.
8. If the IP pointing is working, the next time you
type:
your-own-site-name.com into the web browser, it should try to
contact your server at the IP address you pointed it to.
It is then up to your web server software or any other
services you run on your machine
to be configured correctly so it will reply with the expected
webpage or answer.
