Managed DNS Questions

Question: What is a Mail Exchange Record (MX Record)?
The MX record for a domain name tells the internet which mail server will handle
email for that domain name. However, in order for the email to work, the mail server
that will handle the email must be configured correctly to accept incoming emails
for that specific domain name as well.

Note:  You should never point an MX record to an IP address.
It will not work! MX records must only be pointed to hostnames.

For example. Lets pretend you registered the domain name:  your-own-site-name.com here,
and you want to setup a mail server to handle your own mail for:  your-own-site-name.com.
Lets also pretend that your mail server IP address is:  222.111.222.111

To setup your MX record:
1. login to Account Manager
2. click on "Domain Accounts" link
3. click on the domain name you want to manage. In this example it is:  your-own-site-name.com
4. Click on "MX pointing" link right next to Managed DNS Services near the bottom of the page.
5. In box #1, you will enter in the mail server name.
In this case, since you are creating a mail server under your own domain name,
    it would be:  mail.your-own-site-name.com
6. In box #2, enter in the mail server's IP address.
In this example, that would be: 222.111.222.111
7. In box #3, enter in the mail server priority value. This value is not important at all if
you just have one physical mail server to handle email for your-own-site-name.com
8. Click save, and wait about 1 day for the DNS to propagate before your mail will know to
start routing to your own mail server.
9. Remember, you will need to setup your email server software correctly for you to be able to
receive email at your-own-site-name.com. On most mail server software, you will have to
specifically specify in its configuration files on your server, which domain names your
mail server is allowed to receive mail for. If you do not specify your-own-site-name.com
in the email software configuration, your mail server software may reject the mail.
